Elementary School Teams Put Cipher Skills to the Test at 4th Annual CCSD Math Competition

Woodstock ES won the overall first-place trophy

The 4th annual CCSD Elementary School Math Competition drew several hundred young mathematicians to the event on Saturday at Freedom Middle School where students put their ciphering skills to the test in individual and team competitions.

Participating schools formed after-school math clubs based on student interest and, if needed, held tryouts to select a competition team from the club’s membership.  Designed by the Office of Academics & Accountability, the goal of the event is to encourage students’ interest in math, develop their problem-solving skills, and inspire them to excel and have fun with mathematics. The Cherokee County Educational Foundation is the sponsor of the event. 

Fourth-grade and fifth-grade students competed against fellow mathematicians in their respective grade levels. Mathematicians had the opportunity to place individually and as a team in separate competitions, with points from both going to their school’s overall score.  During the individual competition, students solved problems during a series of timed challenges.  For the team competition, teams of five students were given 10 math problems to solve with four minutes per problem. Teams were able to collaborate, calculate, and submit their solution to earn points. 

Trophies were awarded to the top two individual winners for each grade level, with a school trophy and ribbons awarded to the members of the two top-scoring teams for each grade level.  The school with the highest combined 4^th and 5^th grade individual and team scores won the overall district trophy.  When all the answers were submitted and checked, Woodstock ES took first-place honors with the most accumulated points, with Sixes ES claiming second place and Holly Springs ES STEM Academy third.

Fourth Grade winning teams were  Woodstock ES in first place, Bascomb ES in second place.

3rd place: Olin Aubuchon – Mt. Road ES

4th place:  Isaac Preddy – Sixes ES

5th place: Arthur Viebrock – Holly Springs ES

Fifth Grade winning teams were Sixes ES in first place, Carmel ES in second place.

Fifth Grade individual winners were

2nd place: William Wright – Holly Springs ES

3rd place: Russell Roderick – Liberty ES

4th place: Gavin Matthews – Hickory Flat ES

5th place:  Enzo Inaudi Choconta – Carmel ES
