What’s the most innovative idea that you’ve tried in your classroom?
This past school year, I was able to get a 3D printer to use for projects in my classroom. My students became much more engaged when they could create 3D models of the topics we were discussing in class. They especially enjoyed designing and printing 3D models of plant and animal cells.
Who is the best teacher you ever had and what made him or her special?
My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Gibby, is the teacher who had the biggest impact on my life. Until that time, I did not really enjoy school. She made every day memorable and full of fun learning experiences. I still remember her when I think about how important it is to make a meaningful connection with our students.
What can parents do to prepare their children for learning?
It is so important to be part of your child’s education. Let them know you are their biggest fan and celebrate their achievements. Children who have support at home excel so much more in school.
What are the obstacles to getting all kids to achieve?
I think the biggest obstacle is finding activities that engage all students. When students aren’t invested in their learning, it truly affects their ability to achieve. Even children who struggle with academics are more willing to challenge themselves when they are engaged in the lesson!
