Meet the CCSD Teacher: Kelsey Francen of Woodstock ES!

We’re proud of our CCSD family’s dedicated teachers … and every week, you’ll get to know one of them better through a Q&A posted here. #CCSDfam

Fourth-grade teacher

What’s the most innovative idea that you’ve tried in your classroom?
I want my students to be interactive throughout my lessons, so I turn everything I teach into a song and dance!  We create jingles and hand signals to help us remember whatever standard/concept we are learning.  This strategy keeps the kiddos engaged and involved with the learning process.  They love it and it makes our day more fun!
Who is the best teacher you ever had and what made him or her special?
Mrs. Cooper, my sixth-grade language arts teacher, had a great impact on my life.  She encouraged me to take risks and gave me the confidence to be myself.  She made learning so exciting and inspired me to become a teacher!
What can parents do to prepare their children for learning?
Parents can prepare their children for learning through authentic conversations at home that promote both problem solving and communication skills.  This can enhance the child’s vocabulary and encourage them to participate in more academic conversations at school.
What are the obstacles to getting all kids to achieve?
I believe one of the biggest obstacles for kids is their self-confidence.  Children are constantly comparing themselves to others and get discouraged if they have different strengths than their peers.  In our class meetings, we highlight each other’s unique qualities to build a more positive mindset and gain self-confidence.
